Blessed to Be a Blessing Collective Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to removing financial barriers for students and families in need. We ensure that every student has access to both educational and noneducational opportunities, such as academic programs, enrichment activities, field trips, extracurricular experiences, and essential life events, that are often out of reach due to financial hardship.
Our core focus includes strong engagement in STEM and STEAM initiatives, providing students with meaningful exposure to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through hands-on learning and innovative programs.
As our organization continues to grow, we will expand to meet a wider range of needs, supporting the whole child and family.
The Founder
Known simply as “the Queen,” Melanie Ervin is a woman of deep faith, service, and purpose. A devoted Christian, she lives with a heart committed to uplifting others, especially those in need.
For more than twenty years, she has served as an educator, shaping minds and inspiring growth both inside and beyond the classroom. Her leadership extends far beyond her profession—she is a true changemaker, influencing lives through compassion, wisdom, and action.
Her calling to serve led her to found Blessed to Be a Blessing Collective, Inc., a nonprofit organization on a mission to inspire, bring hope, and empower youth, families, and communities through service and education. With a strong focus on STEM and STEAM initiatives, the organization works to create access to opportunities regardless of financial limitations, while encouraging others to give and be a blessing wherever they can.
Her journey is also marked by a love for exploration and culture. She has traveled to 35 states and six of the seven continents, with Antarctica next on her list. Whether discovering new cuisines or immersing herself in diverse environments, she embraces the beauty of the world with curiosity and gratitude. She finds joy in horseback riding and spending time in nature, where she feels most grounded and free.
As a mental health therapist, her work is transformative. In a rapidly changing world, she is dedicated to supporting emotional well-being, particularly within communities where mental health has long carried stigma. She is passionate about breaking barriers, shifting perspectives, and emphasizing the importance of mental wellness for all.
Through faith, service, and unwavering dedication, "the Queen" continues to leave a powerful and lasting impact, uplifting lives, opening doors, and reminding others of the power of being blessed to be a blessing.
Family Matters
Blessed to Be a Blessing Collective Inc. was born from a love that never fades, a living tribute to honor my beloved mother, father, and brother who now watch over me from above. Their Caribbean roots, unwavering faith, and boundless love are woven into every part of who I am; they did not just shape me, they anchor me. In every life I touch and every door I help open, I honor their legacy, carrying their strength in my spirit, their prayers in my steps, and their love in every seed I sow, determined that through this work, their impact will not only live on, but continue to transform lives for generations to come.
Board of Directors
With more than 20 years of experience in education, Vicki Powell brings a deep understanding of leadership, mentorship, and community impact to the organization. As Vice President, she works closely with the CEO to help guide the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the nonprofit. Her role includes overseeing organizational programs, strengthening partnerships with schools and community stakeholders, supporting volunteer and outreach initiatives, and ensuring that projects are executed effectively and with excellence. Drawing from her extensive background in education, she helps cultivate a culture of service, accountability, and empowerment that aligns with the organization’s mission to uplift and inspire communities.
Known for creating high-energy experiences and meaningful community connections, Michael Hankerson Jr. leads the organization’s entertainment and engagement initiatives. As the head of Entertainment, he develops and manages events, creative campaigns, and outreach experiences designed to inspire participation, increase visibility, and attract support for the organization’s mission. His expertise in entertainment and audience engagement helps create memorable programs that unite communities, celebrate culture, and encourage giving. Through music, live events, and innovative programming, he plays a vital role in building excitement and strengthening the organization’s presence throughout the community.
As an attorney and trusted legal professional, Makayla Owens provides essential legal oversight and guidance to ensure the organization operates with integrity, transparency, and accountability. In her role as Legal Board Member, she helps ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and nonprofit governance standards while advising leadership on risk management, contracts, policies, and organizational protections. Her commitment to ethical leadership and sound legal practices helps safeguard the organization’s mission and supports its long-term sustainability and credibility within the community.
Joshua Harris brings a unique combination of legal knowledge, faith-based leadership, and educational experience to his role. He is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with community leaders to advance the organization’s mission and expand its impact. His work includes identifying funding and grant opportunities, advocating for policies that benefit underserved communities, and helping position the organization as a trusted partner in community development and outreach. With his background as an attorney, pastor, and teacher, he offers a compassionate yet strategic approach to leadership, advocacy, and public engagement.
